Gentle Support for Growing Little Heads

Noticing a flat spot on your baby’s head can be alarming, but you’re not alone, and there’s help available. Many parents discover some degree of head shape irregularity during the first few months of their baby’s life, especially if their little one favors a certain sleeping position or has tight neck muscles (a condition called torticollis). Fortunately, with early assessment and the right treatment plan, most infants respond well and go on to develop a natural, symmetrical head shape.

At Orthotic & Prosthetic Clinics of America, we specialize in custom cranial remolding helmets designed to gently guide your baby’s head into a more proportional shape as it grows. Our helmets have a unique, layered design that allows us to adjust the fit over time, supporting healthy development without interrupting your baby’s day-to-day comfort.

    Understanding Plagiocephaly and Treatment Protocols

Plagiocephaly, or flat head syndrome, is characterized by a flattened spot on one side of the head, a forward-shifted ear, and bulging of the same-side forehead. If therapy and repositioning aren’t effective by 3 months, a custom cranial orthosis is typically recommended. Here’s how we guide your child’s care:

    Evaluate early

At 3 months of age, every child should be assessed for cranial symmetry as part of routine care.

    Measure accurately

Manual measurements using anthropometric calipers can help detect asymmetry.

    Refer when needed

If an 8mm or more asymmetry is present, the child should be referred to a cranial remolding specialist.

    Begin orthotic treatment promptly

Early intervention leads to better outcomes and may reduce treatment duration.

    Track progress

Regular follow-ups ensure the helmet is adjusted appropriately to guide natural head growth.
